RGUSU threatens bandh even as exams approach while NCP blames govt

NCP to file RTI

ITANAGAR, Apr 28: Just few days away from Semester exams for  MA/M.Sc/M.Com/M.Tech/MBA & B.Ed which will begin from May 3, and hundreds of careers at stake, students of the Rajiv Gandhi University led by its Students Union has threatened that they would launch 12 hours campus bandh April 30 in protest of VC’s return and violation of University rules by hiring large number of police force from outside.

Allegedly 50 police personnel consisting of IRBn and APPBn entered into the campus without prior notice and broke open the lock of the Vice Chancellor’s Office which was closed by the agitating RGUSU team.

The students are demanding removal of the VC for allegedly violating University rules. The RGUSU while condemning the move of the state government machinery in strongest terms stated that the “Police entry is not permissible in the University campus and university has the enough security personnel of its own and intellectual bodies to think how to carry out democratic means of protest to  redress its long pending grievances. Hiring of police forces from outside by Professor Belliappa has further encouraged the already tensed RGUSU

team to agitate”, it said. The RGUSU President Tayuk Sonam further accused the State Government and High Power

Committee constituted earlier for inaction and bias which lead to present state of affairs. He further added that “Professor Belliappa’s coming in the Campus has agitated the students and teaching fraternity once again and state government shall bear the entire responsibility if any unwanted law and order problem arise in coming days”.

On the other hand, expressing anguish and resentment over the ongoing problems at Rajiv Gandhi University, NCP Arunachal, Vice President Tad Tana blamed the state Govt. for its failure to bring in an amicable solution. He said that state government should not only maintain law and order but it should go step ahead by going deep into the root causes of  the problem and tackle it accordingly. The allegations of the students body on present Vice Chancellor Professor K C Belliappa and consequent and repeated creation of anarchy, chaos and lawlessness in the campus has not only hurt the sentiments of the entire students and teaching community of the state, but more importantly it has sent a negative image of the state across the country, he added. He informed that “NCP Arunachal as a true alternative to present sleeping regime has decided to file an RTI to unearth the allegations of corruptions, nepotism and financial mismanagement by University Authorities headed by Professor Belliappa. “If found guilty of committing gross irregularities by the VC Professor Belliappa, the NCP shall press tooth and nail for his removal and if found otherwise, the party shall urge one and all involved in the whole mess not to drag on the matter further and let peace and tranquility, a prerequisite for academic excellence prevail once again in the University Campus” he added.

Fulbright Fellowship knocks the doors of Arunachalee students

Vijay Swami

Fulbright fellowship is known as one of the most prestigious fellowships in India as well as in United States. It is U.S. Government funded programme, established long back in 1946, soon after the World War-II, under the legislation introduced by former Senator J. William Fulbright. The programme is basically designed to promote mutual understanding between the people of U.S. and the people of other countries. The Indo-U.S. agreement on educational exchange, signed by former Prime Minister

Jawaharlal Nehru and U.S. ambassador Loy Henderson on February 2, 1950 in New Delhi, established the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI). The foundation was renamed as United States – India Educational Foundation (USIEF), awarding the Fulbright–Nehru Scholarships and Grants to India and U.S. Scholars under Scholar Exchange programme.  Now in its’ 60th year, the USIEF has awarded approximately 8350 Fulbright Fellowships to Indians and U.S. citizens. No doubt, it has immensely helped to bring the people of India and the United States closer through educational exchanges. Today it is one the largest academic and cultural exchange programmes in the world. Currently the programme operates in 155 countries. It is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions and Foundations in 50 countries and by U.S. Embassies in others. Since 1950, the Fulbright programme has sponsored Indians from all walks of life to gain greater understanding of U.S. society, culture and values and to foster a deeper appreciation of India amongst the American people. It provides an opportunity to scholars, students, teachers, educationists, professional, administrators and social activists to interact with world communities and helps in building professional development in their working field. So far as subjects are concerned, I say, ‘sky is the limit’.

Normally, the Fulbright Fellowships are announced in April-May every year in different disciplines and seek the application by June. From regional level selections, the scholars are shortlisted for National level interviews  The selected scholars then move to respective affiliating universities and institutions starting from October.  I am one of the fortunate enough to get Fulbright Fellowship under Indo-American Environment Leadership Programme in 2005. I was attached to “Project Learning Tree” programme of American Forest Foundation to understand community initiatives in addressing the core issues of environment. The fellowship provided me an opportunity to share my ideas with scholars, schools teachers, community leaders, university professors of Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, New Mexico and Boston. The fellowship has definitely provided me a new insight and better understanding of the environmental issues, take them effectively to the students and through students to the community. According to me, Fulbright Fellowship is a grand and huge fellowship. The fellowship has soft considerations for the scholarly applicants belonging to unrepresented area, underprivileged sections of society, if the projects are unique in nature. I feel Arunachal has no dearth of learned and scholarly people, only the thing is they do not get right information at right time.

Programmes such as today’s “Opportunities and scope of higher education through fellowships” with a direct deliberation from U.S. Educational Advise Services, are definitely opening the new doors to the students community of Arunachal. Come on students, grab the opportunity!

(The writer is a Fulbright Fellow-2005 and presently a Project Director, Research Institute of World’s ancient Traditions Cultures & Heritage,(RIWATCH) Roing Arunachal Pradesh)
